PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS and FEES
(effective January 2016)

General Requirements

IMPORTANT NOTE

No student may accept rank in jujutsu from another instructor while officially a member of Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu. A student who fails to adhere to this requirement is subject to disciplinary action and possible forfeiture of rank. Students may train with other instructors and receive rank in other martial arts.

1. Rank is awarded to students of good moral character who have been accepted by a
Wa Shin Ryu sanctioned instructor
2. Must have basic knowledge of dojo etiquette and procedures
3. Must uphold the highest standards of hygiene (see Required Club/Class Health/Hygiene Practices on Wa Shin Ryu page)
4. Regular dojo attendance and training
5. Must meet minimum active time-in-rank requirements ("active" is defined as a minimum of eight workouts per month. This however, varies by rank) or complete prescribed number of workouts
6. Must officially register rank with appropriate organization (no club ranks are awarded)
7. Make required number of Saturday/extra scheduled workouts.

Students should be aware of the fact that what they are tested on does not constitute the entire content of material that is taught in a particular semester.

R means technique is demonstrated on right side. L&R means left and right.


Promotion Fees and Requirements (effective January 2016)

Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu does not have an annual membership fee. However, we do have promotion fees for which students are awarded a System Certificate signed by the Founder.

At the black belt level, promotions may also include a Certificate of Rank Recognition from the Institute of Traditional Martial Arts at the University of New Mexico. The fee for this certificate is $20. Students are also strongly encouraged to register their rank with the USJJF. Online annual membership is $40.

System promotions in Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu do not include liability or accident insurance. This may be purchased separately through Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu.

The size of the characters may range from 1/2" to 3/4" square

This is to be viewed as more of a demonstration than a test in which tori exhibits for the audience the principles of the system. The demonstration should convey to the audience what Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu is about.

    Demonstrates leadership in the field by having own club, by being invited to put on clinics and seminars, and so on

    NOTE: NOTE: An individual achieving the rank of Rokudan in Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu becomes eligible to receive his/her Menkyo Kaiden, or Teaching License of Complete Transmissions. At this level, the recipient will be able to demonstrate that he/she has learned all there is to learn about Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu (both technical skills and theory) and is able to pass it along to others as a true representative of the system, the Founder, and the current Grand Master (Soke). NOTE: A jujutsuka achieving the rank of Rokudan becomes eligible to receive his/her Menkyo Kaiden(Teaching License of Complete Transmissions)

    For 7th to 10th Dan

    Promotion to these ranks reflects total technical mastery, commitment, reputation, contributions, impeccable character and impact in the world of jujutsu. To reach the rank of 9th and 10th dan the individual will have achieved worldwide recognition for his/her contributions to Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu, will be a published scholar (books, articles, scientific papers) and will be a fine example of the Guiding Principles of the system. Such a person will inspire confidence and respect and will have developed his/her inner powers to a level that is clearly visible through his/her technique, quality of movement, personality, knowledge and wisdom.

    ** Strategic Responses to attacks include the following SEVEN levels of action which require increasing levels of competency:

    1. Escapes (Fusegi Waza),

    2. Blocks (Uke Waza),

    3. Deflections (Sorasu Waza),

    4. Evasions (Furimi Waza),

    5. Joining (Aiki Waza),

    6. Interceptions (Bogai Waza), and,

    7. Deceptions with Counters (Damashi into Kaeshi Waza)
