ITMA Friendship Seminars (Budo Without Boundaries) held twice in the Fall and twice in the Spring

Half day clinics featuring different traditional martial arts. From: Aikido, Wing Chun, Traditional Jujutsu, Karate, Traditional Judo, Kenjutsu, and other traditionally-based systems.

Where: Held in Albuquerque at various dojos on a rotating basis
Donation: $4. Half to the host dojo and half to ITMA

Who may sign up: Open to ITMA black belts, instructors, brown belt holders (sankyu to ikkyu, or equivalent)and invited guests

* Friendship Seminar IX: at Sandia Judo Club (on Acoma SE) Sunday, January 20th, 2013. Session I:Using the cane for offense and     defense, 1-2.30pm, with Steve Schrankel sensei (holds black belt in several arts including Karate and Escrima)

* Friendship Seminar X: at Sandia Judo Club (on Acoma SE) Sunday,February 17th, 2013. Session I: Police restraining and combat techniques, 1-2.20pm, with Sensei Rob Debuck. Sensei Debuck is a former Captain with APD and holds a 4th Dan in Judo and a 1st Dan in TKD. Session II: 2.30-3.50. Combat applications of judo with Sensei Jesse Ballou, 6th Dan Judo; Director of Sandia Judo Club.

* Friendship Seminar XI: Sunday, March 17th, 2013 at Sandia Judo Club
Session I: 1-2.20pm. The history, differences and evolution of "sport-based" Karate vs combat-based" Koryu Karate; differences between Chinese/Okinawan and Japanese Karate. Proper body mechanics of "atemi-waza" in Karate; grappling (Torite) techniques found in Karate and an analysis of Kata and the true fighting techniques found within kata. Instructor: Ray Perales Sensei (6th Dan Goju ryu; 4th Dan Aikido).
    Session II: 2.30-3.50pm. Using the cane for offense and defense, Part II, with Sensei Steve Schrankel. Sensei Schrankel holds black belts in several arts, including Karate and Escrima)

* Friendship Seminar XII: Sunday, April 21st, 2013 at Sandia Judo Club (Acoma SE)

        Session I, 1-2.20pm: "Combat Applications of Judo" with Sensei Jesse Ballou. Sensei Ballou is a 6th dan in judo and the Director of Sandia Judo Club in ABQ, NM

        Session II, 2.30-3.50pm: "Handgun Disarming Techniques" with Sensei Robert Baker and Andrew Yiannakis. Senseis Baker and Yiannakis both teach at UNM. For this session        please bring a prop (a plastic gun, a water pistol, or whatever). This will be a hands-on experience (/H2>

Session II with Ray Perales sensei: 2.05-2.55pm, (Goju Ryu Okinawan Karate: Teaching proper use of "atemi-waza," examining the proper use of body mechanics to maximize
power when executing striking techniques along with transitioning to locks and throws in self-defense situations. Techniques will focus primarily on the Koryu
art of Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate, known for its close-range practical fighting techniques and use of elbows, knees, locks, throws, and breathing techniques that
facilitate the generation of power)

       (ii) Dr. Keith Winterkorn: Bagua Chuan posture/movement, "Swallow Plays on Water", with several applications

Note: Each instructor will have up to 30 minutes; up to 15 minutes will be devoted to teaching two or three techniques and then we'll have 15 minutes for practice per session. There will be a 15 minute warm-up from 1.30-1.45pm

* Friendship Seminar XXII: Sunday, February 22nd (2-4pm), at Sandia Judo Club (Acoma SE and San Mateo SE)
       

PRESENTERS:

       (i) Dr. Andrew Yiannakis, Traditional Jujutsu. Dr. Yiannakis is the Director of the Institute of Traditional Martial Arts at UNM
            and holds a 7th Dan in Jujutsu and a 6th Dan in Judo
       (ii) Laoshi Michael DeMarco, Kuntao Silat. Laoshi DeMarco is the publisher of the Journal of Asian Martial Arts
        (iii) Professor Eugene Sedeno, Shaolin Kenpo. Prof. Sedeno holds a 9th Dan in Kenpo.

TIME: 2-4pm

Note: Each instructor will have up to 35 minutes; 15 to 20 minutes will be devoted to teaching 3-4 techniques and then we'll have 15-20 minutes for practice per session. There will be a 15 minute warm-up from 2.0-2.15pm

PRESENTERS:

SEMINAR THEME: Kansetsu Waza (joint locking techniques)

       (i) Randy Rogers sensei, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Mr. Rogers holds a 4th dan in BJJ and has studied with the Machado
             and Gracie families. He will be teaching arm bars and the triangle choke
       (ii) Mark Fraser sensei, Kodokan Judo. Mr. Fraser holds a 4th dan in Judo and a 2nd dan in Jujutsu. He'll be teaching techniques from Judo's Kime No Kata

TIME: 2-4pm

Note: Each instructor will have up to 35 minutes; 15 to 20 minutes will be devoted to teaching 3-4 techniques and then we'll have 15-20 minutes for practice per session. There will be a 15 minute warm-up from 2.0-2.15pm

      (iii) Dr. Jerome Buenviaje Sensei, 5th dan Aikido. Joining and flow in Aikido
